Dating someone with an eating disorder

While filming for a television shoot, I had to stop every hour on the other to take a dump. It disrupted the whole day of the shoot, but I shook it off and figured I would stay away from laxatives … for a while. Some people may also unhealthily cope with past sexual abuse through an eating disorder. On the flip side, your woman may be extremely sexual.

She may use sex as a numbing tool in order to cope with her bad feelings about herself. After weeks of eating a maximum of 1, calories while exercising like a fiend, I would give in to a binge. The binges were orgasmic — sometimes better than sex another harsh truth and every single bite of food felt like someone was going down on me. Heaven at each morsel.

But the feelings after the binge? I felt like the biggest piece of crap on the face of the earth. How did I do that? Did I want to become a disgusting fat pig? Wow, what a big loser I am. If your best girl is dealing with an eating disorder, encourage her to get help. If it takes an intervention, do it.

Gather all her loved ones around and collect some treatment plan options so she has less of a chance to back out. You should however be prepared for her to refuse treatment. It takes us years to bottom out Bottoming out in an eating disorder is just as hard as with drugs. We may avoid sex and intimacy due to shame over our distorted body image Some people may also unhealthily cope with past sexual abuse through an eating disorder. Encourage us to get help If your best girl is dealing with an eating disorder, encourage her to get help. This, too, shall pass. So it stands to reason that you must treat your relationship with someone who is recovering from an eating disorder in the same way.

Weight and food are, like the weather, easy targets for starting cocktail party conversations — because everyone has to eat. Moreover, we build entire tribes and identities based on our diets and workouts. Think about it this way: However, you can learn to express your excitement by channeling that energy into something you can do together , like a movie night or a trip to a karaoke bar.

Guilt and shame about food may drive your partner to feel like they need to hide the behaviors from you — and eating disorders multiply in the darkness. To avoid this, keep your observations to yourself. The recovered individual gets to find his or her own path and learn how to become comfortable eating around others, one strange meal at a time. That said, there is a certain responsibility on the part of a partner to reduce the potential for harm, and that includes moving the focus of conversation away from the body.

Telling your partner that you love their curves, for example, might be triggering, because they are still coming to terms with having to have curves in the first place. But try to channel some of that positive energy into complimenting them on a non-scale victory.

There are plenty of ways to show your partner that you support the incredible person they are. In many instances, the disordered person develops the obsessive desire to simply disappear. Any reminder that the body is tangible — including touch by someone they love — can be a painful reminder that they have failed to meet that objective.

The inexplicable repulsion to or fear of touch, even into recovery, can hinder sexual exploration even though they may feel desire and want to participate in sexual activity with their partners. These effects can last long after recovery — which can be very frustrating to a partner with a mismatched drive. This could be a good time, however, for some consensual cuddling or reassuring hugs. Sexual abuse alone is often a hindrance in the development of mature sexual relationships later in life; when coupled with the trauma of an eating disorder, it can provide a serious challenge to both partners.

Hopefully, your recovering partner will be working through the trauma with a licensed professional or through other means, but please understand that this is a long and difficult process.

Dating for sex: dating someone with an eating disorder

If you happen to love a woman with an eating disorder, I say to you now: An eating disorder is not about trying to look good for a partner. For me, I felt as if I had very little control of life and I just started dealing with issues stemming from the time I was raped as a teenager. Pair that with a deep feeling of insecurity and shame from post-traumatic memories along with repressed feelings and BAM: I was in eating disorder hell.

Your woman is not starving herself or binging and purging because she wants to be perfect for you — she wants to perfect for herself and perfectly controlled! And by the way: Until that eating disorder is conquered, she will never drop that false belief of perfection. If I can just be this weight or that size or look like this instead of this.

These are the little twisted narratives that people with eating disorders will tell themselves. Your lady is married to control. She wants things to happen in a predictable way. She wants to have the reigns over everything in her life but most especially, food. An eating disorder takes discipline and control to a whole other playing field. Bottoming out in an eating disorder is just as hard as with drugs.

It takes years for folks to bottom out and seek help. For me, I was an exception in that there was no defining event that stopped me from my eating disorder. It simply seemed to trickle away as I found other ways to cope with my feelings of anxiety, depression, and past abuse. If I had to pin down one moment that made me stop and question what I was doing it would be this: While filming for a television shoot, I had to stop every hour on the other to take a dump.

It disrupted the whole day of the shoot, but I shook it off and figured I would stay away from laxatives … for a while. Hopefully, your recovering partner will be working through the trauma with a licensed professional or through other means, but please understand that this is a long and difficult process. If you truly love and support your partner — and want to remain a partner for the long haul — you may have to develop and exercise a good amount of patience and restraint. Encourage an open, honest, and non-judgmental conversation about consent, expectations, and desire.

And do not push. Set the precedent for respect and openness. It is fully possible to recover from an eating disorder and to carry on a normal relationship, but because of the presence of behaviors associated with this mental illness, our partnership will require a different level of love, understanding, patience, and openness. As a partner, you need to be prepared for rough days.
